An Athens man was shot at Bethel Midtown Village last week when he went there to make a drug deal, Athens-Clarke-County police said.

Officers responded to the apartment complex shortly after midnight Friday on a report of a person that had been shot there, according to police.

While responding to the complex, officers learned that 31-year-old Curioki Donta Hyche of East Carver Drive was being treated for a gunshot wound at Piedmont Athens Regional Medical Center.

Hyche told officers he had been shot by “an unknown person" after going to the apartment complex to buy drugs, according to police spokeswoman Shashi Charles.

After an investigation, police obtained an arrest warrant charging Hyche with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

He was arrested when found at a Head Street residence Friday afternoon.

Hyche was released from jail late Friday night upon posting a $5,700 bond, according to the Clarke Cunty Sheriff’s Office.
