A coach for the Clarke County School District’s football program was arrested Friday night for allegedly assaulting a student player after football practice at Clarke Central High School, according to a media release issued by the Athens-Clarke County Police Department.

Anthony Lavell Lonon, 44, of Club Drive was charged in an arrest warrant with misdemeanor battery.

The warrant was issued on Friday, based on a woman's allegation that Lonon has assaulted her 13-year-old son after football practice on the evening of Aug.19, police said.

The woman reported the alleged incident the next day and Lonon surrendered himself at the Clarke County Jail Friday night and was soon released on a $1,000 personal recognizance bond, according to the jail’s website.

Police said Lonon was a lay coach, which refers to someone who is employed by the school district for coaching responsibilities only and is not a teacher or other type of staff member.
