An Athens man who looked online for companionship and asked for lewd photographs instead received in the mail very gruesome photos, according to an Athens-Clarke County police report.
The 30 -year-old man reported on Sunday that he had been looking for companionship when he replied to an ad on the Craigslist classified advertisements website.
The person the Athens man corresponded with sent lewd photos at the man’s request, the report states.
The man apparently contacted someone by phone or text because, according to the police report, when he “asked the replying party if they spoke English (he) never received a reply from the NC number.”
The report stated that the next day, the Athens man “received several graphic and horrifying photos of decapitated and mutilated human heads from a number with the same area code, but not the same number,” according to the report.
The man said he reported the incident “out of an abundance of caution,” the police report noted.
Police said that phone number used to send the photos was a smartphone messaging app number that was linked to bandwidth.com
