A 48-year-old man who police say was murdered at a house in eastern Athens-Clarke County had gone there to help out during a family crisis,
The tragic turn of events unfolded at about 8:53 a.m. Monday when police officers were dispatched to 1249 Athens Road, to investigate a report of a domestic dispute involving a son cursing at his mother.
While en route the call was updated with information that someone in the residence had possibly been shot.
Upon arrival officers were flagged down by two women who were screaming, "help him" and "he's inside," according to a police report.
Inside the home officers found 48-year-old Willie Antonio Jewell lying on the floor of the kitchen, dead from a gunshot wound.
The women outside pointed out as the suspect a resident of the house who was sitting in a car parked in the driveway. Police said that 26-year-old-Cedric Robbie Jones was then taken into custody without incident.
The subsequent investigation determined that Jones had been arguing with his mother when Jewell arrived from his home nearby on Winding Brook Trail to help.
"Jewell was there to attempt to defuse the situation," police Lt. Jody Thompson said.
The intervention ended tragically, with Jewell killed and Jones arrested on charges of malice and felony murder, and possession of a firearm in the commission of certain felonies.
Jones is being held in pretrial detention at the county jail without bail being set.

Hopefully Mr. Jones will be tormented by what he's done. My condolences to all those that cared for and loved Mr. Jewell. Hugs to the Mama. No Mama should be abused by their own children, or anyone else for that matter.
