Athens records first murder of 2024

A man was fatally shot Monday morning in what police said was the first murder of 2024.

The Athens-Clarke County Police Department said that at at about 8:53 a.m. officers responded to a report of a shooting at 1249 Athens Road.

Upon arrival the officers found 48-year-old Willie Antonio Jewell dead from a gunshot wound, police said.

Police said that the suspected shooter lived at the residence and he was as taken into custody.

 Cedric Robbie Jones, 26, was charged with malice and felony murder, and possession of a firearm in the commission of certain felonies.

Police had not yet established a motive for the slaying.
