Athens teen shoots mother

By Joe Johnson

A 13-year-old Athens boy reportedly was in custody Tuesday after he shot his mother with a gun last week.

According to an Athens-Clarke County police report, officers responded to a home in a westside neighborhood shortly before 3:30 p.m. Friday to investigate reports that a juvenile had shot his mother.

Shortly after officers arrived at the residence, they took the boy into custody and firefighters were on scene to treat the victim for a gunshot wound in her arm, the report noted.

The officer who wrote the incident report said that while he did not formally conduct any interviews, he overheard the victim say that she and her son had an argument in which the boy pulled a gun on her and she wrestled him over the weapon before he ran out the back door.

The woman stated that when she went to shut the door she heard two gunshots, one of which passed through the door and struck her in the arm, according to the police report.

Officers observed two bullet holes in the back door and located one spent cartridge case, but not where the boy stashed the gun, the report noted.

The state Department of Juvenile Justice ordered the teen to be detained at a DJJ facility on charges of aggravated assault, possession of a firearm during the commission of certain felonies, and possession of a pistol by someone under 18 years old.
