He began as a volunteer firefighter in 1994 and on Friday Scott Dakin hung up his helmet at the rank of captain with the Barrow County Fire Department.

During the three decades sandwiched in between Dakin wore different helmets in the performance of a variety of roles from EMT and deputy director of emergency management to Critical Incident Stress Management team leader and public information officer.

As an instructor, Dakin taught on numerous subjects around the country and internationally.

On Friday many Barrow County community leaders, coworkers, family members and friends came by his retirement reception to reminisce, mingle amongst friends, and bid Captain Dakin best wishes in the next step of his journey.
