Athens police investigating Rolling Ridge arson case

By Joe Johnson

Athens-Clarke County police said they were looking for a suspect in an arson incident Thursday night at Rolling Ridge apartments.

According to a police report, a 44-yea-old woman was allowing a friend, Quenton Jerome Moon, spend the night in a spare bedroom.

The woman said that she was aware that Moon was abusing crack cocaine or methamphetamine in the bedroom, and when she heard him making a lot of noise she went to check, but Moon would not allow her into the room, according to the police report.

A short time later the woman heard fire alarms sounding but Moon had locked himself in the bedroom. She then ran outside to alert others about what was happening, at which time two males grabbed fire extinguishers and put out the flames on a burning mattress in the room that Moon had occupied.

The resident reportedly told police that when the males entered the bedroom, Moon jumped out a window and ran away.

The police report stated that Moon, a 39-year-old Chalfont Lane resident could not be located.

The incident is being investigated as a first-degree arson, police said.
