Athens teen sought on murder charge for man's shooting death

By Joe Johnson

Athens-Clarke County police said Sunday morning they were searching for a teenage boy who fatally shot a man the night before during a block party at an eastside apartment complex.

Officers responded to Carriage Court in the Clarke Gardens complex shortly after 11 p.m. Saturday to investigate a reported shooting, according to police.

Upon arrival, officers located 38-year-old Carlos Harper on the ground with gunshot wounds and began to render first aid, police said; Harper was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Police said they obtained warrants charging 15-year-old Marquise Malcom with felony murder, aggravated assault, possession of a firearm by a person under 18, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime.

Malcom reportedly may have shot Harper during a confrontation over teen behaving inappropriately with the victim’s daughter during the block party.

Police asked for anyone with information on Malcom’s whereabouts to call 911.

Persons with information concerning the shooting should contact Detective David Harrison at (762) 400-7361 or david.harrison@accgov.com.

Anonymous tips can be made by calling the Crime Stoppers Tip Line at (706) 705-4775.
