Man claims self-defense in west Athens shooting

By Joe Johnson

An Athens man was arrested Friday after he claimed to have shot someone in self-defense.

Deon Christopher Romeo, 20, told police that he was moving out of an apartment on Crane Drive that he shared with the mother of his child when the woman’s brother and other males “began to jump him,” said police Lt. Shaun Barnett.

“When Romeo exited the apartment, one of the individuals involved in the altercation began reaching into a vehicle.” he said. “Subsequently, Romeo discharged his firearm, striking the subject in the foot.”

A police incident report notes that a witness who had been eating lunch in the parking lot of nearby Georgia Square Mall heard gunshots and then began to video record Romeo involved in an argument and holding up his arm as if he had a gun.

Romeo was arrested for aggravated assault, and he was released the following day upon posting bond at the county jail.

Here's what I hope. I hope the justice system works. The DA, the lawyers, the jury and the judge. I hope they all work to find out what happened and if decided as guilty, I hope ole Romeo spends some time in a dark place where he can consider the logic of carrying and firing a handgun in my hometown. There will hopefully be some 'law and order' candidates for DA and other posts. They will receive all my votes and some of my money.

Replying to

I support the 2nd Amendment to the Constitution as I presume you do. I also think it is being interpreted to allow personal firepower that results in injury and death. My home and my family is protected by a firearm. It NEVER leaves my house.
