Nate Moss chosen to lead Athens-Clarke County Fire and Emergency Services

By Joe Johnson

After serving several months in an interim capacity, fire services veteran Nate Moss has been appointed as Athens-Clarke County fire chief director of ACC and Fire and Emergency Services.

Moss had served as Interim chief since Oct. 7 due to the retirement of then-chief Jeff Scarbrough, who retired.

County Manager Blaine Williams announced on Wednesday that the appointment was immediately effective.

“After a national search for a new fire chief, I am excited to name Interim Chief Moss to the permanent position,” Williams said in a released statement. “His dedication to the department and the people who serve this community is extraordinary. I know he will be an invaluable asset to the Athens-Clarke County community, the Fire and Emergency Services Department, and ACCGov as a whole.”

Moss called the appointment "the greatest professional honor" of his career.

"I will strive every day to assure that with teamwork and collaboration we forge our identity as an outstanding fire department that offers unparalleled service to our community," he said.

Moss has served with the department for 20 years and has spent his entire career in public safety with the department. He managed public information for the department, assisted with many emergency management responsibilities, and has worked in areas of emergency suppression response, training, and administration with the department.
