If a tropical storm achieves maximum sustained winds of 74 mph, it is classified as a typhoon when located in the Northwest Pacific Ocean, west of the dateline. (That same storm would be called a hurricane if located in the North Atlantic Ocean or parts of the Northeast Pacific Ocean or South Pacific Ocean.)

If a typhoon located in the Northwest Pacific Ocean reaches maximum sustained wind speeds of 150 mph or more, it is considered a “super typhoon.”
