Science fact of the day: Hurricanes only occur in certain areas

To be termed a hurricane, a tropical storm must reach maximum sustained wind speeds of 74 mph and be located in the North Atlantic Ocean, the Northeast Pacific Ocean east of the dateline, or the South Pacific Ocean east of 160°E. Storms located in other areas are classified using different terminology such as “cyclone” or “typhoon.”
