A Watkinsville man was arrested late Monday afternoon for allegedly sexually assaulting a child, Oconee County Sheriff Scott Berry said.
According to Berry, 38-year-old David William Haines was charged with one count each of rape, aggravated child molestation and aggravated sodomy.
Berry said the victim was under 14 years old but would not release the victim’s gender.
The sheriff said that Haines and the victim knew each other, and the alleged assault occurred within the past year.
The allegations were brought to the attention of the sheriff’s office on Monday and arrest warrants were issued after the child underwent a forensic interview, Berry said.
Haines was being held Tuesday at the Oconee County Jail without bail pending an initial court appearance, which had yet to be scheduled.
The investigation was ongoing, Berry said.
