Every year December 21 marks the official start of winter.
It also is the date of the Winter Solstice, when the sun is directly over the Tropic of Capricorn, a line that is located at 23.5 degrees south of the equator and runs through countries like Chile and Australia, and is furthest away from the sun. The distance brings colder temperatures and less light to the Earth.
Erik Hogan captured a magnificent image of the sun rising in Athens this winter solstice morning, December 21, 2023.
Erik is a photographer who primarily shoots landscape, wilderness, and nature scenes in the Athens area.
