A domestic violence incident this week in the small Madison County city of Colbert has left two people critically injured and the gunman dead.
According to the Madison County Sheriff's Office, at about 8:40pm, on Wednesday deputies responded to the Bread Basket on Highway 72 in Colbert to investigate a report of two people who had been shot at a different location.
The caller was determined to be one of the victims, who had driven to the store to await assistance. Upon arrival, deputies found a 47-year-old woman and her 21-year-old son at their vehicle, both suffering from gunshot wounds.
It was subsequently determined that the incident had occurred about two miles from the store, at an address on Fennell Lane .
The woman identified the shooter as her ex-boyfriend, who did not live with her, according to the sheriff's office.
She and her son were transported to Piedmont Athens Regional Medical Center for treatment of what the sheriff's office described as life-threatening injuries.
Soon afterwards, deputies found the 54-year-old offender dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound in a his vehicle on Linda Street, in the same neighborhood as where the woman and her son were shot
Hopefully she and her soon can fully recover physically and mentally.
