Science fact of the day: Kagus have nostril flaps

The Kagu (known locally as the Kagou) is a bird native only to New Caledonia.

It has special skin flaps that cover its nostrils.

Scientists think these skin flaps, called corns, may help keep dirt out of the bird’s nose when using its bill to dig.
