Science fact of the day: Mantellas are only found on Madagascar

Mantellas, a specific genus of frog that covers 17 different species, are only found on the island of Madagascar.

They are extremely brightly colored and secrete toxins similar to those found in South America’s well-known poison frogs.

However, while the toxicity of these frogs can vary by species, most are generally not deadly. Instead, they use their toxins to deter predators by making them sick or at the very least making themselves taste bad in the hopes that predators will spit them out or think twice about eating their fellow frogs!
