Athens-Clarke County Commissioners recently approved the concept of a new Fire Station 5, to replace current the decades-old station on Whit Davis.
The station is located in a residential neighborhood of single and multi-family homes in east Athens and could be replaced by afacility of about 13,000-square-foot.

The commissioners also approved a measure that allows for the search for a new site.
The project would be funded through a Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax.
The current Station 5 is said to not be adequate for personnel currently assigned to work there lacking among other things a layout thats suitable for male and female firefighters.
