Oglethorpe County students and staff are mourning the death of Saniah Appling, an eighth-grader who passed away last week.
A published notice stated that she died at her home in Crawford on Friday, April 19.
"Our thoughts and prayers go out to Saniah's family, friends and loved ones as they navigate through this profound loss," Oglethorpe County Schools Superintendent Beverly Levine said in a news release. "Let us remember Saniah's bright smile and impact she had on all who knew her."
Oglethorpe County Coroner Jason Lewis said he could not release details concerning the girl’s death while it was under investigation.
The Oglethorpe County School System made available additional counselors to students, parents and faculty this week.
Jones Funeral Chapel at 1518 Athens Road in Crawford is in charge of arrangements, and they plan to hold a visitation this Friday, from 1 to 6 p.m.
A funeral service is scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday at New Grove Baptist Church in Winterville.
