Oglethorpe fisherman drowns after falling from boat

By Joe Johnson

Oglethorpe County Public Safety personnel responded to a call Saturday on Water Works Drive in Crawford in regards to a man who fell out of a boat while fishing. EMR, EMS, Sheriff’s Office and Fire responded. Within three minutes of the call going out individuals from these agencies were in the frigid water searching for the individual.

Additional resources were needed after it became apparent that it was going to be a recovery mission rather than a rescue mission. Elbert and Hart counties sent divers and the state Department of Natural Resources responded with equipment and personnel. Approximately 2 hours and 40 minutes after the call came in the fisherman’s body was recovered.

The victim’s family has been notified, but officials had not released his identity as of Saturday night.
