An early morning fire in Barrow County claimed the life of an 8-year-old child.
The fire was at a residence in the 100 block of Matthew School Road in Winder, according to Barrow County Emergency Services.
"As we arrived on the scene we found a home heavily involved in fire and the family advised that there was still one person in the home” said BCES Capt. Scott Dakin. “Our firefighters made a rapid entry through a bedroom window where the person was reported to be. During the vent, enter, isolate, search mode a (child) was found still in one of the beds located in the room.”
As additional crews arrived, an aggressive interior attack was initiated to assist in the rescue of the child.
“The firefighters worked fast and hard while managing many different operations at one time," said Dakin, who is public information officer for BCES.
“Unfortunately, despite heroic efforts by the firefighters the child passed away as a result of injuries from the fire,” said Deputy Chief Brett Skinner. “I am very proud of the fact that they put their lives at risk in an attempt to give the child the best chance at surviving. My thoughts and prayers will be with the family that suffered such a great loss, and the firefighters who were on the scene.”
The two adults were transported to the hospital.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
