Police consider Athens man’s self-defense claim in shooting of family member

By Joe Johnson

A man who shot and seriously injured a family member in his Athens apartment over the weekend will likely not face criminal charges.

Deshawn Grant, 36, shot 38-year-old Xavier Grant, when brandishing a gun while Xavier was allegedly threatening people in Deshawn's apartment on Viking Court on Sunday afternoon, according to a police report.

Xavier Grant was a family member who was visiting at the time.

According to police, Deshawn told investigators that he retrieved a gun from his room and was displaying it as Xavier continued to make threats, at which time it went off.

Deshaun called 911, and when officers arrived they found Xavier lying on his back just inside the door, his shirt drenched with blood.

As an officer began cutting off the shirt to look for injuries he saw a bullet entry wound in the middle of Xavier's throat.

The injured man was taken by ambulance to the hospital, where police said he was in serious condition.

The gun was located on the floor with a spent shell stuck in the ejection port, the police report noted.

Detectives went to the apartment for an investigation that included talking witness statements and they left without pressing charges.
