Science fact of the day: Saigas have very unique noses

Writer's picture: Classic City NewsClassic City News

Saigas have big, bulbous, proboscis-like noses that drape over their mouths.

Their nasal bones are complex and their nasal openings are lined with lots of hairs, glands, and mucous tracts.

It is thought that their unique noses may help saigas warm up frigid winter air as they inhale it and filter out dust during the arid summer months.

These remarkable creatures also have a very keen sense of smell.
