Two pedestrians struck by vehicles in separate collisions died this week

By Joe Johnson

A pedestrian who was struck by a car a week ago has died from his injuries, Athens-Clarke County police announced in a Thursday afternoon news release.

Hoyt Hayes, 66, of Winder was struck and critically injured the evening of Nov. 12 while walking in the area of Commerce Road and Boly Drive, according to police.

The driver remained at the scene and was interviewed by Traffic Unit officers.

The motorist was not immediately charged.

This investigation remained active and police asked that anyone who may have witnessed the collision or has information about the incident to contact Senior Police Officer Vincent Schill at (762) 400-7092.

Hayes died four days after another pedestrian's death.

Police said Mary Gail Paul, 74, of Athens was hit by a car Nov. 9 in the parking lot of the Athens Spine Center on King Avenue.

She was transported to a local hospital with what was initially believed to be non-life-threatening injuries. However, her condition began to deteriorate and she died Sunday, according to police.

The driver of the vehicle remained at the scene and was questioned by police, according to the report.

Anyone who may have witnessed the incident is asked by police to contact Traffic Unit commander Lt. John McIlvaine at (762) 400-7089.

There have been 18 fatal collisions this year in Athens-Clarke County, four involving pedestrians.
