Athens-Clarke County Commissioner Carol Myers (D-8) has endorsed Lexy Doherty for congress in Georgia’s 10th congressional district, citing the need for a more inclusive political environment.
Doherty, 31, is running to represent the twenty counties spanning from the Southeast Atlanta suburbs to the Northeast Georgia Piedmont and surrounding rural areas including the cities of Athens, Madison, Watkinsville, Winder, Elberton, Danielsville, Sparta, Monticello, Eatonton, and Greensboro.
“For Democrats to move forward, we must build lasting relationships and coalitions across the counties that make up Congressional District 10,” said Myers, who represents neighborhoods on the Eastside of Athens. “Too much of our national discussion is based on fear.”
Doherty plans to win by focusing on common goals and values that transcend political divisions. “We may have different backgrounds and perspectives, but together, we can bring much-needed change,” said Doherty. “My platform focuses on sustainable rural economic growth, small business development and innovative job-creating energy solutions. And, we must pass the John Lewis Voting Rights Act.”
“Lexy represents hope, common sense, hard work, and a belief in the dignity and worth of all Americans,” said Myers, former Dean of Athens Technical College. “Lexy is our future.”
Bodily autonomy and the economic recovery have been prominent national issues this election, uniting bipartisan coalitions to defend a woman’s right to choose.
“I’m supporting Lexy Dougherty for Congress because she and I agree on how to address major issues facing the country,” said Myers who served as Mayor Pro Tempore in 2022. “Lexy is working hard to not only win votes for her candidacy but also to help other Democrats in northeast Georgia win.”
Georgia is now a battleground state, meaning every vote counts in rural and suburban areas. Clarke County has approximately 69,000 voters. This is Doherty’s first run for the seat held by MAGA Republican Mike Collins who replaced Rep. Jody Hice after his failed bid for Secretary of State. Federal courts recently approved new district lines drawn by the Republican controlled Georgia General Assembly.
Doherty, raised in a small agricultural community, tended to horses before moving to Athens after college. “My parents are hardworking and value education and preserving our beautiful countryside,” she said. “My father is a Conservative and my mother is a Liberal, so I know there are areas where I could bring my pragmatic idea of progress today and a vision for tomorrow.”
At this point I don't care what party a person represents, it's just we don't need another Marjorie Taylor Greene !
What is Lexy Doherty's background. ? Jobs ? Detailed political views ? Need more info than tended to horses before moving to Athens after college !
Oh thank goodness! I’ve been anxiously awaiting the announcement of who Myers would endorse. Talk about a slow news day.
