An Athens man was arrested for allegedly trying to rape his wife.

The Athens Clarke County Police Department was alerted to the alleged incident at about 11:20 a.m. Sunday when receiving a 911 call from a woman who reported she had been assaulted by her husband.

The 30-year-old woman told a communications officer that her husband, Jesus Ponce-Irazalval, "grabbed her forcibly, threw her on the bed, held her down, and began taking her clothes off in an apparent attempt to have sex,” ACCPD Lt. Shaun Barnett said. “This was all done against her will.”

The woman was able to convince her husband to stop and leave the residence, at which time she was able to call 911, according to Barnett, who said the woman suffered an abrasion during the incident, which was witnessed by the couple’s eight-year-old daughter.

Ponce-Irazalval was arrested Sunday afternoon and was charged under Georgia’s Family Violence Act with aggravated assault, battery, and third-degree child cruelty.

He was detained at the Clarke County Jail without bail having been set.
