Authorities were investigating the death of a person whose body was found floating in a Barrow County pond on Wednesday.

According to a statement by Barrow County sheriff's Maj. Ryan Sears, the sheriff’s office was notified about a possible body in a pond off Booth Circle in Winder.

“The Sheriff’s Office arrived on scene and confirmed it was a deceased person,” Sears said in the Thursday morning statement. “The body has been taken to the crime lab for an autopsy to be performed to determine the identity of the deceased and the cause of death.”

The Georgia Bureau of investigation is assisting in the investigation.

According to Jesse Maddox, special agent in charge of the GBI’s Athens field office, the partially-decomposed body appeared to be that of a male.

Maddox said it could take a few days to determine the person’s identity, and even longer to determine the cause and manner of death.

The Barrow County Sheriff's Office had previously issued a lookout for a missing 25-year-old man who was last seen Sept. 21 at a gas station near state highways 82 and 211.
