Double shooting in Athens' Five Points neighborhood leaves one dead, another injured

A man reportedly was killed and a woman injured Saturday night in a double shooting in the Five Points section of Athens.

The shooter was identified as a 32-year-old male with a Dunwoody addressis known and was not considered to be a threat to the community, according to Athens-Clarke County police Public Information Officer Lt. Shaun Barnett.

“It is believed the involved parties were known to each other,” he said.

Barnett said that at about 8:44 p.m. officers responded to a residence in the 200 block of Morton Avenue regarding a shooting.

Upon arrival officers found a 30-year-old woman and a 31-year-old man, both from Athens, who had been shot, he said; they were transported to a local hospital, where the man subsequently died.

Athens-Clarke County Coroner Sonny Wilson identified the deceased victim as John W. Townley.

Barnett said the woman's injuries were "serious."

“The suspected shooter is accounted for and there is no threat to public safety as a result of this incident. It is believed that the involved parties were known to each other,”the police spokesman said.

“The identity of the suspect is known,”Barnett said. “No charges have been made; however, the investigation is ongoing.”

Police have not released the names of the victims or shooter, but Barnett said he had limited details about the incident and updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
