Body found in east Athens appears to be that of an adult male

By Joe Johnson

A body that was discovered Wednesday in a ditch along Athena Drive appeared to be that of an adult white male, according to Clarke County Coroner Sonny Wilson.

According to police, the badly-decomposed body was found at about 4:30 p.m. by a road construction crew that was working in the 300 block of Athena Drive, a section of the road that has been blocked off due to construction.

Wilson said his initial impression that the body belonged to a white male came from what he observed at the scene. He said more should be learned when the body is examined by forensics experts at the Georgia Bureau of Investigation’s State Crime Lab, including an identity and cause of death.

According to Wilson, he and police assumed the deceased person may have been homeless due to the location where his body was found, an isolated area that has several homeless camps.

Anyone with information concerning the death is asked to contact Athens-Clarke County police Lt. David Norris via email at (706) 400-7165 or david.norris@accgov.com
