Humane Society, UGA vet school partnering to treat pets in shelter setting

By Cheryl McCormick

The Athens Area Humane Society has developed a unique partnership with the University of Georgia's College of Veterinary Medicine. Fourth-year veterinary students at UGA will receive hands-on experience in the principles and practice of veterinary medicine in a shelter setting.

UGA is home to Georgia’s only College of Veterinary Medicine, proudly serving the state and the nation for nearly 75 years by educating the next generation of veterinarians, providing exceptional veterinary care, and tackling the most pressing animal and human health challenges.

This is a win-win for UGA veterinary students and the pets in AAHS' care. Students receive an immersive experience in modern shelter operations, leaving them prepared for clinical practice and ready to advocate for shelters and the homeless pets they serve.

With the new 15,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art facility located at 1030 Mitchell Bridge Road, and this partnership, the work done at the Athens Area Humane Society can mean even more more.
