Pedestrian shoots at occupied car in downtown Athens

By Joe Johnson

A pedestrian in downtown Athens reportedly shot at a car as it drove past him last weekend.

According to Athens-Clarke County police, officers responded at about 2:18 a.m. Saturday to the area of College Avenue and East Clayton Street on a report of gunshots being fired.

“Preliminary investigation indicates that a male pedestrian fired at a black sedan that was driving on Clayton Street, said Lt. Shaun Barnett, ACCPD’s public information officer.

“The vehicle had several occupants,” though no injuries were reported, he said.

The investigation is ongoing, and Barnett said that anyone with information regarding the shooting or has recorded video from the area of the shooting on a dashcam, or another device to contact Detective Hovie Lister at 762-400-7333 or hovie.lister@accgov.com.

As long as there are little if any consequences for this crap from the DA's office, it will continue. Our DA said that there was minimal gang activity in our community.

Minimal gang activity? Compared to Atlanta sure but compared to Athens 5-10 years ago (the only metric that matters) it has clearly gotten out of hand.

I think it's official now, Athens has been overrun with gangs. Downtown used to be a relatively safe place... Certainly not a place where you could expect to find people shooting at each other.

What happened? 🤔
