Science fact of the day: Bowerbirds build elaborate structures

Bowerbirds build elaborate, often highly decorated structures that are used as displays during the mating ritual.

There are 3 main types of bowers: a cleared area with a domed tunnel in the middle made of sticks and sometimes decorated with vegetable juices; a display court with large leaves laid upside down or sometimes tiled with rocks; and a maypole structure that uses a sapling as a central tower and usually has an assortment of vegetation placed at the base. Some bowerbirds have even been observed building teepee-like structures nearly 9 ft. tall!
