Science fact of the day: Desert Tortoises spend most of their lives underground

Desert tortoises spend around 95% of their lives in burrows.

Living mostly underground allows them to survive on very little food and stay cool in the hot desert temperatures despite their cold-blooded nature.

During the spring, summer, and early fall months, they periodically venture out to eat vegetation and breed.
