Science fact of the day: Earth’s polarity can reverse

Roughly every 400,000 years, a magnetic reversal takes place on Earth.

Currently, scientists don’t expect it to happen for at least another 1,000 years.

While scientists who have reviewed the geologic record don’t believe the change is likely to cause any harm, in the future it will cause compasses to point in many different directions during the switch.

Then once the magnetic reversal has settled in, all compasses will point south instead of north.
