A Winterville man this week was arrested for an alleged sexual assault on a handicapped woman who was confined to a wheelchair.
William Ogelsby, 44, of Cherokee Road was charged by the Oglethorpe County Sheriff’s Office with sexual battery and exploitation of a disabled adult.
According to sheriff’s Capt. Mike Tyndell, his agency received a complaint on July 30 that a transport driver had inappropriately touched a 27-year-old female passenger during an unscheduled stop while returning home from the Adult Day Care Center in Athens.
A follow up investigation by Sgt. Jimmy Jones concluded that the driver, Oglesby, “had in fact stopped at a school parking lot located on Fairground Road in Oglethorpe County and made inappropriate contact of a sexual nature with the passenger who suffers from cerebral palsy, a learning disability and is confined to a wheelchair.” Tyndell said.
Warrants were obtained for Oglesby’s arrest on Aug. 5, and four days later he turned himself in, according to Tyndell, who said Oglesby was subsequently released on bond.
