ACCPD investigating second homicide in 8 days

By Joe Johnson

An Athens teen was killed Thursday morning in what police said was the second homicide to occur in Athens-Clarke County in just over a week’s time.

The victim, identified only as a 15-year-old Athens resident was fatally shot at about 9:30 a.m. between the 100 and 200 blocks of Westchester Circle, according to police, said Capt. John Radford, the police department’s interim public information officer.

“The investigation is in its early stages, and further information is not currently available,” Radford said.

Police are asking for anyone with information about the shooting to contact Detective Paul Johnson at (762) 400-7060 or paul.johnson@accgov.com.

The teen’s death occurred eight days after 32-year-old Cecil Antonio Pittard was shot dead by the son of his girlfriend’s mother during an altercation at the woman’s home on Garnett Ridge Drive the night of Nov. 25.

Police on Thursday said that Pittard’s death continued to be investigated to determine if any criminal charges would be lodged against the woman’s 29-year-old son, Joshua Lamar Scott.
