Athens drug investigation nets gun and fentanyl seizures, one arrest

By Joe Johnson

A months-long investigation into a local fentanyl distribution ring culminated Wednesday in the arrest of a 56-year-old Athens man now facing multiple drug trafficking and weapons charges.

Darren Turner was taken into custody on July 29 following a coordinated operation led by the Northeast Georgia Regional Drug Task Force.

Authorities executed search warrants across three locations tied to Turner—including a residence on Freeman Drive, a local hotel room, and a storage unit. The sweeps were carried out with assistance from the Athens-Clarke County Police Department’s Gang, Traffic, and K-9 units, following targeted traffic stops earlier in the day.

The raids yielded significant seizures:

— A trafficking quantity of fentanyl

— Four firearms

— Four vehicles allegedly used to facilitate the trafficking scheme

— Approximately $74,000 in cash

Turner has been charged with Trafficking in Fentanyl, Possession with Intent to Distribute Fentanyl, and three counts of Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon.

The case remains under investigation by regional drug authorities.
