Athens food deliveryman foils armed robbery attempt by punching suspect

By Joe Johnson

An Athens food deliveryman recently fought off a would-be armed robber.

According to an Athens-Clarke County police report, a 20-year-old employee of Jason’s Deli on Alps Road said that on the night of Sept. 24 he made a delivery to an apartment at 715 Hill Street, and after walking back to his pickup truck someone approached him from behind.

The Jason’s employee then heard the distinct sound of a switchblade knife being opened according to the report, and when the suspect demanded the deliveryman’s wallet, the man turned and struck the assailant, knocking him off balance.

The deliveryman then quickly got into his truck and drove back to Jason’s Deli, where he called 911, according to the report.

The employee said he did not get a good look at the would-be robber, but believed him to be a Black male wearing all black clothing who was about six feet tall and had a very muscular build.

Officers searched the area of the attempted robbery but were unable to locate anyone matching the suspect’s description.
