Athens man assaults grandma then robs another person

Spencer Thurlow Long, 41, of Hill Street, was arrested after he assaulted his elderly grandmother and robbed a man on consecutive days last week.

The first incident happened on the afternoon of July 21st when Long assaulted his 83-year-old grandmother at their home.

“She said Spencer snapped at her and began striking her, causing lacerations to her arm and face,” then smacked the phone from her hand when she tried to call 911, according the the police report,

He fled the scene before police officers arrived,

The woman was so afraid of her grandson that she “said if we had to shoot him go ahead and do so,” according to the report.

She was transported by ambulance to the hospital.

Long was arrested the following day when police were investigating a man’s report that he had been violently beaten and robbed by the suspect on Baxter Street.

Long is being detained without bail on charges of aggravated assault, aggravated battery, kidnapping, inflicting pain on an elderly person, obstruction of a 911 call. armed robbery, family violence battery, and also with violating bond from a 2025 arrest.
