Athens native pens raw urban crime novel

Updated: Apr 14

By Lenor Penferd

Consignment is a raw gripping urban crime novel that dives deep into the world of street politics, ambition, and betrayal. Set in Baton Roug the story follows the lives of two childhood friends who start off hustling together but end up on drastically different paths one chasing fast money in the streets, the other trying to build something real. But in a world where trust is rare and every move can be your last, loyalty is tested, and survival comes at a cost.

This book was inspired by real environments and real people. I’ve seen the pressures of poverty, the attraction of the hustle, and the toll it takes on those chasing it. Consignment isn’t just about drugs or violence it’s about identity, power, and the price of ambition. The characters in this novel are deeply flawed but real. They reflect the pain, dreams, and desperation found in many underserved communities.

The title Consignment is more than a reference to street business. It’s symbolic of how so many people live their lives holding on to something that isn’t truly theirs. In the streets, nothing is free. Everything is borrowed whether it’s respect, trust, or power — and sooner or later, payment is due. This book explores what happens when that bill finally comes.

I didn’t write this story to glorify the streets. Quite the opposite. I wrote it to show what’s behind the curtain the trauma, the paranoia, the betrayals and the sleepless nights. For every win there’s a heavy loss for every dollar made there’s a soul taxed. I wanted to create a story that feels real because too many books romanticize a lifestyle that often ends in prison, death, or regret.

At its core, Consignment is about decisions. It’s about the impact of choices made in moments of desperation or ego. It’s about the weight of trying to carry a neighborhood on your back while quietly falling apart. It’s about trying to break cycle even if you’re trapped in one.

My goal as a writer is to tell stories that matter stories that spark thought, stir emotion, and hopefully lead someone to choose a better path. If this book reaches a young person on the edge or opens the eyes of someone who never understood this world, then I’ve done my job.

Consignment is part fiction, part truth but all heart. And for those who read it, I hope you walk away not just entertained, but enlightened.
