Athens woman arrested after stabbing husband

By Joe Johnson

A woman was arrested over the weekend after she stabbed her husband during a dispute at their home on the west side of Athens.

The incident occurred early Sunday evening at University Oaks apartments off of West Broad Street when 29-year-old Victoria Denise Coleman stabbed 48-year-old Varnirious Coleman in the thigh.

Police said it was the second time that they responded to the Coleman residence that day in connection with a dispute.

The woman claimed that she had stabbed in self defense, but police said they determined otherwise:

After laying down their infant for a nap, Victoria grabbed two knives from a butcher block, threw one of them at her husband and stabbed him twice in the thigh with the other knife.

Varnirious was treated at the scene by EMS and Victoria was arrested for aggravated assault. She was charged under the state Family Violence Act.
