Cedar Shoals athletic Hall of Famer mourned

By Joe Johnson

The Cedar Shoals High School community is mourning the death of an alumna who was a star athlete.

Retana Yvette Hayes was found deceased in her car on the evening of June 4th.

The cause of death is pending an autopsy at the state medical examiner’s office.

Ms. Hayes, 55, had been a standout basketball player at Cedar Shoals who last year was inducted into the school’s athletic hall of fame.

“Retana was schooled on the basketball court by Marvin Nash. She could mirror all his gifted moves on the court. So, it is no question that she was one of the best female basketball players in Athens,” Brian D. Johnson said on her memorial page “What l had loved and admired about Retana is that she had never let her great Cedar Shoals High School basketball days dictate or overshadow her kindness. Inclosing, she had represented Dunlap Road with honor and grace!”

Miss Nita Johnson said, “Retana and I was in 5th grade class together and in high school and I remember she made me laugh and smile when we saw each other and our small talks. Luv you always dear classmate and RIH and shoot me a hoop in heaven.”
