DPH pop-up event planned for Athens to get more people vaccinated

In an urgent effort to stop the resurgent spread of COVID-19 and its Delta variant, the Northeast Health District is participating in a series of pop-up events to get more residents vaccinated across Georgia. The Georgia Department of Public Health (DPH) Say “YES” Summer events will offer walk-up vaccinations that are free and do not require appointments, insurance, or identification.

After successfully vaccinating over 100 residents at Say “YES” in Savannah last Saturday, August 14th, DPH, the Northeast Health District, and local partners will host a Say “YES” Summer event this Friday and Saturday in Athens. The event will be held at the Athens Orthopedic Twilight Criterium, where there will be on-site vaccinations, live music, and local art for attendees. The first 20 vaccinated each day (4 to 7 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday ) will receive free Twilight merchandise.

Say “Yes” is built to attract the attention of foot traffic in popular public places with live installations by local artists and art organizations, offering education, conversation, and on-site vaccination. This national-to-local collaboration is between DPH, local artists and art organizations, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), David J. Sencer CDC Museum, South Arts, and Home Depot. As part of all pop-up events, DPH will unveil a participatory art installation, the “I Said ‘YES’ to COVID-19 Vaccine Because…” community mural, for residents to write their own reasons for receiving a COVID-19 vaccine and inspire others to do the same. The Northeast Health District vaccination team will operate on-site mobile vaccination clinics to provide educational materials and vaccinations. DPH and the Northeast Health District believe the collaboration between the Georgia arts and science communities will both inspire and inform Georgians of the importance of COVID-19 vaccines for all aspects of life. These events are part of broader vaccination efforts by the Northeast Health District. Residents can receive a COVID-19 vaccination through their county health departments. Although appointments are available, citizens can typically receive a vaccination without an appointment on most days. Additional opportunities are also available through vaccine outreach events. The calendar is updated on a weekly basis to include vaccination events throughout the Northeast Health District.
