Eulalio Diaz Cortes, 32, was arrested early in the morning of February 28th after shooting guns while intoxicated outside his home in the Stonehenge neighborhood of western Athens-Clarke County.
Responding to reports of loud music and gunfire, officers arrived at the home on Stonehenge Way and saw Cortes emerging from a wooded area and walking toward a car from which loud music was blaring.
As they aimed rifles at the man and yelled orders, Cortes ignored them and flashed a thumbs-up before climbing into the car and attempted to drive away.
He didn’t get too far, however, because the car struck and ran over a barrel that got caught in the undercarriage, raising the front wheels off of the ground.
Cortes exited the disabled vehicle and began approaching the officers while continuing to ignore their commands. One of the officers shot taser darts into the man, causing him to fall to the ground.
Police noted that Cortes had a strong odor of alcohol on his breath and that they recovered two pistols from his car.
He was booked into the county jail on charges of discharging a firearm near a public highway, DUI, firing a gun while intoxicated, and obstruction.
The jail’s website indicates that Cortes is being held without bail because an immigration hold has been placed on his release.
