The man suspected of an armed robbery last month in the Five Points neighborhood of Athens has been arrested.

Stephen Thomas Howard Jr., 46, was taken into custody Monday evening on warrants charging him with armed robbery and aggravated assault for the June 26 holdup at the Circle K on South Lumpkin Street.

The convenience store’s 27-year-old clerk gave police the following account of the holdup:

An older white male with shoulder-length hair and wearing a helmet entered at about 3 a.m. and poured himself a fountain beverage, which he placed on the checkout counter along with cash that was mostly in change.

When the clerk opened the register, the man produced a snub-nose revolver and demanded all of the cash. However, he left before the clerk fully emptied the till of all its bills.

He left with $120, but dropped $20 in a nearby parking lot, where he got into a white sedan.

The entire incident was recorded by the store’s security cameras, and detectives were helped in identifying Howard as the suspect by patrol officers with the Athens-Clarke County and University of Georgia police departments.

Howard, a resident of Horizon at Tallassee apartments, was arrested on warrants served by county sheriff’s deputies.
