GBI investigates death of prisoner at Clarke County jail

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is looking into the death of an inmate at the Clarke County Jail.

Around 1:45 Saturday morning, March 16, jail staff found the woman unresponsive and in apparent medical distress.

“Staff immediately began working with medical personnel to provide aid to the woman until EMS responded to the scene,” a news release from the Clarke County Sheriff’s Office states.

The inmate was transported to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Her name is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

At the request of the sheriff’s office, the GBI took over the investigation
