Homeless couple indicted for Athens park damage

By Joe Johnson

A county grand jury has indicted a homeless man and woman who are responsible for causing thousands of dollars in damages at the Southeast Clarke Park.

William Joseph Cochran and Audrey Leann Page were charged with second-degree arson and two counts each of interference with government property and second-degree criminal damage to property.

Tuesday’s indictment stems from the couple’s arrest last May when police said they caused over $30,000 in damages at the county park.

A restrooms had been damaged by fire and a baseball field dugout also was damaged by fire.

Cochran and Page were identified as suspects from game cameras that had set up by the Fire Marshal’s Office, which had been investigating arson at the park.

The defendants have remained in pretrial detention after having been denied bail on the basis they would continue being a threat to the community if released.
