A Clarke County grand jury this week indicted an Athens man who held up an eastside sex novelty store two months ago and threatened the clerk and several customers by pointing a gun at them.
Malcom Lamont Smith, 22, of Florida Avenue was charged with armed robbery, aggravated assault with the intent to commit armed robbery, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, four counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and five counts of false imprisonment, according to the indictment that was filed Tuesday in Clarke County Superior Court.
Athens-Clarke County police said the incident happened late the night of Sept. 17 when Smith allegedly entered Elations of Athens on Lexington Road shirt wrapped around his head and at gunpoint stole an undisclosed amount of cash from the clerk. He also allegedly tried to rob a customer.
The victims were all women in their 20s, according to police.
After an investigation, police identified Smith as the suspect and they obtained warrants for his arrest.
Smith was taken into custody on Oct. 9, and as of Thursday he remained incarcerated without bail at the Clarke County Jail.
