Athens-Clarke County police Tuesday afternoon identified the victim and suspect in a homicide that happened Monday afternoon at Bethel Midtown Village.
The victim was identified as 34-year-old Jarred Lamar Sanders of Gainesville, and the suspected shooter was said to be Joseph Desmonde Baughns, 35, of Athens.
Baughns allegedly shot Sanders at about 1:50 p.m. Monday in a building’s breezeway at the gated apartment complex off College Avenue.
Sanders was transported to the hospital, where he later died, according to police.
After an investigation, police said they obtained a warrant charging Baughns with malice murder.
A motive for the fatal shooting remained under investigation, according to acting police Public Information Assistant Kenneth Brooks.
Baughns, who remained at large Tuesday afternoon, should be considered to be armed and dangerous and should not be approached, according to police.
Crime Stoppers is offering a cash reward for information that leads to Baughns’ arrest.
Police asked that anyone with information concerning the whereabouts of Baughns should call 911.
Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to contact Detective Scott Black at (762) 400-7058 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
